The 5 pillars of Islam

The five foundations Muslim practice rests on: Shahada (faith), Salat (prayer), Zakat (alms), Sawm (fasting) and Hajj (pilgrimage). A complete frame for ordering your life around Allah.

“Islam is built upon five: testifying that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving the zakat, the pilgrimage, and fasting Ramadan.”

— Narrated by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Sahih al-Bukhari 8 and Sahih Muslim 16

Shahada

The testimony of faith

The first and most fundamental pillar: to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger. It is the doorway into Islam and the ground of every act of worship. Accepted sincerely, it erases every sin that came before (Muslim 121) and makes a Muslim of whoever says it with conviction.

« I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. »

Bukhari 8, Muslim 16

Obligation

Once in a lifetime at minimum, with conviction. In practice: recited in the tashahhud at every prayer, and daily in the adhkar.

Salat

The prayer

The five daily prayers (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) are the direct link between the believer and Allah — a non-negotiable duty for every Muslim past puberty and of sound mind. The Prophet ﷺ said: “What stands between a man and disbelief is abandoning the prayer” (Muslim 82). Prayer washes away sins: “If a river ran at the door of one of you and he bathed in it five times a day, would any dirt remain? — No. — Such are the five prayers: by them Allah wipes away sins” (Bukhari 528).

« Establish the prayer and give the zakat. »

Quran, Al-Baqara 2:43 (repeated 32 times in the Quran)

Obligation

Five prayers a day at set times worked out from the position of the sun. 17 obligatory rakats in all.

Zakat

The obligatory alms

Zakat — literally “purification” and “growth” — is an annual due of 2.5% of net wealth for those whose assets pass the nisab for a full lunar year (hawl). It goes to the 8 categories named in the Quran (9:60): the poor, the needy, its collectors, hearts to be reconciled, captives to be freed, the indebted, the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller. Unlike sadaqah, which is voluntary, zakat is a right the poor hold over the wealth of the rich.

« Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase. »

Quran, At-Tawba 9:103

Obligation

2.5% of zakatable net wealth per lunar year, if it passes the nisab (≈ €560 in silver or €8,050 in gold in 2026).

Sawm

Fasting Ramadan

Fasting the month of Ramadan (the 9th hijri month) — abstaining from food, drink and intimacy from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib). Obligatory for every Muslim past puberty and in health; the sick, travellers, and women who are pregnant, nursing or menstruating are excused and make the days up later. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins are forgiven” (Bukhari 38). Beyond the abstaining, the fast builds self-mastery, compassion for the hungry, and nearness to Allah.

« The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed… so whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it. »

Quran, Al-Baqara 2:185

Obligation

30 (or 29) days of complete fasting each Ramadan, for those past puberty and physically able.

Hajj

The pilgrimage to Mecca

The Hajj is the pilgrimage to the Kaaba in Mecca, once in a lifetime, for every Muslim with the physical, financial and practical means. It runs only from the 8th to the 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah (the 12th hijri month) and gathers over 2 million pilgrims of every origin each year, all in two pieces of white cloth (ihram) that mark absolute equality before Allah. It comprises a sequence of rites: ihram, tawaf, sa‘i, Arafat, Muzdalifah, the stoning, the sacrifice. The Prophet ﷺ said: “An accepted Hajj has no reward but Paradise” (Bukhari 1773).

« Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by those who are able to make the journey. »

Quran, Al-Imran 3:97

Obligation

Once in a lifetime, when the 5 conditions are met: Muslim, past puberty, of sound mind, free, and able (istita‘a).

Islam, Iman, Ihsan: the three dimensions

The 5 pillars (Islam) are the OUTWARD acts of the religion. But the hadith of Jibril (Muslim 8) teaches three complementary levels:

الْإِسْلَام Islam
Visible acts

The 5 pillars (Shahada, Salat, Zakat, Sawm, Hajj) — outward submission to Allah.

Iman
Inward faith

The 6 pillars of faith: belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and destiny.

Ihsan
Excellence

“To worship Allah as though you see Him; for though you do not see Him, He sees you” (Muslim 8).

A complete Muslim is one who practises Islam (the 5 pillars), carries Iman (the 6 beliefs) in the heart, and reaches Ihsan — excellence in worship.
