Choosing a child's name is one of the first parental responsibilities in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: “On the Day of Resurrection you will be called by your names and the names of your fathers, so give yourselves good names.” (Abu Dawud 4948).
The Sunnah recommends naming the child on the seventh day after birth, at the Aqiqa (the ritual sacrifice of one or two sheep for a boy, one for a girl). The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Every child is in pledge for his Aqiqa: it is slaughtered for him on the seventh day, he is given his name and his head is shaved.”
— Abu Dawud 2837, Tirmidhi 1522, An-Nasa'i 4220
If the parents settled on a name earlier, they may name the child at birth — that is permitted. What matters is choosing a name that will honour the child for life.
