Paradise and Hell in Islam
Authentic descriptions from the Qur'an and the Sunnah: the 8 levels of Jannah, the 8 gates of Paradise, the 7 gates of Jahannam, the paths that lead to each, and how to prepare.
“Every soul will taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection will you be paid your full reward. Whoever is kept away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has truly succeeded.”
— Qur'an, Surah Al-Imran (3), verse 185
Paradise
Jannah (literally “garden”) is the eternal home of the believers. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has prepared for His righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no soul has imagined.” (Bukhari 3244, Muslim 2824).
The 8 main levels of Jannah
The highest level of Paradise, beneath the Throne of Allah. “When you ask Allah for Paradise, ask for Al-Firdaws” (Bukhari 2790).
The Gardens of Eden. The eternal home of the prophets, the truthful and the martyrs.
The Gardens of Delight. Frequently mentioned in the Qur'an (5:65, 10:9).
The Garden of Refuge, near the “Sidrat al-Muntaha” which the Prophet ﷺ saw on the night journey (Qur'an 53:15).
The Garden of Eternity (Qur'an 25:15), reserved for the pious.
The Abode of Peace (Qur'an 6:127), where there is no quarrel, no fear and no sorrow.
The Abode of Settlement (Qur'an 35:35), where neither fatigue nor weariness enters.
The Seat of Truth (Qur'an 54:55), near an Omnipotent Sovereign.
The 8 gates of Paradise
Each gate opens for those who excelled in a particular kind of deed:
| No. | Gate | For |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bab as-Salat بَابُ الصَّلَاة | Those who were constant in prayer |
| 2 | Bab al-Jihad بَابُ الْجِهَاد | Those who strove in the way of Allah |
| 3 | Bab ar-Rayyan بَابُ الرَّيَّان | Those who fasted regularly — they alone will enter through it (Bukhari 1896) |
| 4 | Bab as-Sadaqa بَابُ الصَّدَقَة | Those who gave in charity |
| 5 | Bab al-Hajj بَابُ الْحَجّ | Those who performed the pilgrimage |
| 6 | Bab al-ʿIlm بَابُ الْعِلْم | The scholars who taught the religion |
| 7 | Bab adh-Dhikr بَابُ الذِّكْر | Those who remembered Allah abundantly |
| 8 | Bab at-Tawba بَابُ التَّوْبَة | Those who repented often (in some versions) |
A description of Paradise
The four rivers
Bukhari 3207Four rivers rise in Firdaws: of water that never spoils, of milk whose taste never changes, of delicious wine, and of purified honey (Qur'an 47:15).
The trees
Muslim 2792Trees whose shade “a rider on a swift horse could not cross in a hundred years”. The giant Tuba spreads its shade across all of Paradise.
The palaces
Muslim 2838Built of alternating bricks of gold and silver, mortar of musk, gravel of pearls and rubies. Each believer will have a palace matching his deeds.
The food
Qur'an 13:35Perpetual fruit, always available. There is neither hunger nor thirst in Paradise — eating is pure pleasure.
The bodies
Muslim 2834Young bodies, forever thirty-three, smooth, without blemish. No illness, no ageing, no fatigue.
The greatest joy
Muslim 181Seeing the Face of Allah (ar-Ru'ya). “The greatest gift of Paradise: when Allah shows Himself to its people, they will forget everything else.”
Hell
Jahannam is the abode of the disbelievers and of sinners who did not repent. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The fire of this world is one seventieth of the fire of Hell” (Bukhari 3265). Its description in the Qur'an is meant to warn through fear (khawf).
The 7 names / levels of Hell
The general name of Hell. Seven degrees of increasing severity (some scholars say seven levels).
The blazing flame (Qur'an 70:15).
That which shatters and crushes (Qur'an 104:4-5). For slanderers and hoarders of wealth.
The blazing fire (Qur'an 4:10). Mentioned sixteen times in the Qur'an.
The Hell that leaves nothing and spares no one (Qur'an 74:26-29).
The furnace (Qur'an 2:119), for the disbelievers.
The abyss (Qur'an 101:9), for those whose deeds weigh light.
The torments of Hell
The heat
Bukhari 3265“The fire of this world is one seventieth of the fire of Hell.” A single breath of the fire of Hell on earth would scorch every living thing.
The Zaqqum
Qur'an 37:62-66A bitter, thorny tree whose fruits are like the heads of devils. The damned will eat of it until their bellies are full.
Boiling water (Hamim)
Qur'an 22:19-20Scalding water they will drink, which will melt what is in their bellies and their skin. The punishment repeats without end.
Chains and shackles
Qur'an 76:4Bound in chains seventy cubits long (Qur'an 69:32). Garments of fire, with no way out.
Hope: the power of tawhid
An authentic hadith: “Whoever said ‘La ilaha illallah' and has in his heart the weight of an atom of faith will come out of the Fire” (Bukhari 7510). Most scholars teach that every monotheist will EVENTUALLY enter Paradise. Eternal Hell is for those who die having rejected tawhid. This is NOT an excuse to sin: even one day in Hell is unbearable.
