Juz' ʿamma

The 10 short surahs of the Qur'an

The shortest surahs — usually the first ones learnt. Arabic text, English translation and tafsir for each of the last ten surahs of the Qur'an (Al-Fil to An-Nas).

Al-Fil

The Elephant
5 versesMeccan

(1) Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the Elephant?

(2) Did He not bring their plan to nothing?

(3) And He sent against them birds in flocks

(4) that pelted them with stones of hard clay,

(5) and He made them like chewed straw.

Summary / Tafsir

It recalls the Year of the Elephant (570 CE), when Abraha, the Christian viceroy of Yemen, tried to destroy the Kaaba with an army of elephants. Allah sent birds (ababil) that pelted his army with stones of clay and destroyed it. That is the year the Prophet ﷺ was born.

106

Quraysh

The Quraysh
4 versesMeccan

(1) For the accustomed security of the Quraysh,

(2) their security in the journeys of winter and summer,

(3) let them worship the Lord of this House,

(4) who fed them against hunger and made them safe from fear.

Summary / Tafsir

Allah reminds the tribe of Quraysh, the guardians of the Kaaba, that He gave them security (through the universal respect owed to the People of the Sacred House) and prosperity (the winter trade caravans to Yemen, the summer ones to Syria). In return He commands them to worship Him alone.

107

Al-Maʿun

Small Kindnesses
7 versesMeccan

(1) Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense?

(2) That is the one who drives away the orphan

(3) and does not encourage the feeding of the poor.

(4) So woe to those who pray

(5) but are heedless of their prayer,

(6) those who make a show of it

(7) and withhold simple assistance.

Summary / Tafsir

A surah that denounces religious hypocrisy. True faith is not ritual alone: it entails compassion for orphans and the poor, and everyday generosity. Prayer without the heart, and refusing to help a neighbour, are condemned.

108

Al-Kawthar

Abundance
3 versesMedinan

(1) Indeed, We have granted you Abundance.

(2) So pray to your Lord and sacrifice.

(3) Indeed, the one who hates you will be cut off.

Summary / Tafsir

The shortest surah of the Qur'an (three verses). Al-Kawthar is both a river of Paradise reserved for the community of Muhammad ﷺ and the abundant good Allah granted him (the prophetic mission, descendants through Fatima, a universal community). It answers the mockers who said Muhammad ﷺ had no heir after his sons died.

When to recite it: Often in the short prayers (Fajr, the third rakat of Maghrib).
109

Al-Kafirun

The Disbelievers
6 versesMeccan

(1) Say: “O disbelievers!

(2) I do not worship what you worship.

(3) Nor are you worshippers of what I worship.

(4) Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship,

(5) nor will you be worshippers of what I worship.

(6) For you is your religion, and for me is mine.”

Summary / Tafsir

A founding surah of tawhid (the oneness of Allah). It answers the Meccans who proposed a compromise: “worship our idols for a year and we will worship your God for a year”. A firm declaration that there can be no compromise in worship. It also teaches tolerance: “For you is your religion, and for me is mine.”

When to recite it: Before sleeping (Ahmad), and in the first rakat of Witr.
110

An-Nasr

The Divine Support
3 versesMedinan

(1) When the victory of Allah has come, and the conquest,

(2) and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in crowds,

(3) then exalt Him with praise of your Lord and ask His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.

Summary / Tafsir

The last complete surah revealed to the Prophet ﷺ. It announced the conquest of Mecca (630) and the mass entry of the Arabs into Islam. Strikingly, Allah then commands not celebration but glorification and istighfar — a sign that the Prophet's earthly mission ﷺ was drawing to its close.

111

Al-Masad

The Palm Fibre
5 versesMeccan

(1) May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.

(2) His wealth will not avail him, nor what he gained.

(3) He will burn in a Fire of blazing flame,

(4) and his wife as well — the carrier of firewood.

(5) Around her neck will be a rope of palm fibre.

Summary / Tafsir

The only surah of the Qur'an to name an enemy of the Prophet ﷺ explicitly: Abu Lahab, his own uncle and a fierce opponent of Islam. His wife Umm Jamil used to place thorns on the Prophet's path ﷺ. A prophetic miracle: the surah was revealed long before their deaths, and they could have disproved it by converting — they never did.

112

Al-Ikhlas

Pure monotheism
4 versesMeccan

(1) Say: “He is Allah, the One!

(2) Allah, the Absolute Support of all.

(3) He neither begets nor is born,

(4) and there is none comparable to Him.”

Summary / Tafsir

The central surah of tawhid. The Prophet ﷺ said: “It equals a third of the Qur'an” (Bukhari 5013, Muslim 811). In four verses it sums up the Islamic doctrine about Allah: One (Ahad), absolutely self-sufficient (Samad), with neither offspring nor origin, and without equal. An answer to polytheism and to trinitarian conceptions.

When to recite it: Three times after Fajr and Maghrib, and before sleeping. Also three times with Al-Falaq and An-Nas morning and evening (complete protection).
113

Al-Falaq

The Daybreak
5 versesMeccan

(1) Say: “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak,

(2) from the evil of what He created,

(3) from the evil of darkness when it settles,

(4) from the evil of the blowers in knots,

(5) and from the evil of an envier when he envies.”

Summary / Tafsir

A surah of protection (muʿawwidha) against outward harm: the darkness of night (the hour of every danger), sorcery (“the blowers in knots”), envy and the evil eye. Revealed together with An-Nas as a ruqya against the sorcery worked on the Prophet ﷺ by Labid ibn al-A'sam (Bukhari 3268).

When to recite it: Three times morning and evening, before sleeping, and in illness (blowing into the hands and passing them over the body).
114

An-Nas

Mankind
6 versesMeccan

(1) Say: “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,

(2) the Sovereign of mankind,

(3) the God of mankind,

(4) from the evil of the retreating whisperer,

(5) who whispers in the breasts of mankind,

(6) from among the jinn and mankind.”

Summary / Tafsir

The last surah of the Qur'an. Protection against inward harm: the whisperings (waswas) of Shaytan and of corrupting people. Allah is called upon by three of His attributes (Lord, Sovereign, God) — three levels of protection for three kinds of soul. With Al-Ikhlas and Al-Falaq it forms the three Muʿawwidhat.

When to recite it: Always with Al-Falaq: three times morning and evening, before sleeping, and in anxiety or intrusive whisperings.

The recommended order of learning

The classic order taught in mosques and Qur'an schools:

  1. 1
    Al-Fatiha (1)

Obligatory in every rakat of prayer. The absolute priority.

  2. 2
    An-Nas (114), Al-Falaq (113), Al-Ikhlas (112)

The three Muʿawwidhat — protection. Recited together morning and evening.

  3. 3
    Al-Masad, An-Nasr, Al-Kafirun

Short Meccan surahs with powerful messages.

  4. 4
    Al-Kawthar, Al-Maʿun, Quraysh, Al-Fil

They complete the set of the ten shortest.

  5. 5
    Working back through juz' 30

    An-Nasr, Al-Asr, At-Takathur, Al-Qariʿa, Al-ʿAdiyat, Al-Zalzala…

Five tips for memorising quickly

  • • Listen ten times to the full recitation (Al-Afasy is recommended for beginners) before memorising
  • • Memorise verse by verse, repeating each verse twenty times before moving on
  • • Recite aloud, not in your head — auditory memory is the key
  • • Read the meaning before memorising (understanding makes memorising easier)
  • • Revise daily every surah you have learnt, in the Fajr prayer
