What is zakat?

Zakat (الزكاة) is the third pillar of Islam: an obligatory annual almsgiving for every Muslim whose wealth exceeds the nisab (the minimum threshold) for a full lunar year (hawl). The word itself means “purification” and “growth” — it purifies your wealth and grows its blessing (barakah).

The rate is 2.5% (one fortieth) of the net wealth on which zakat is due. It is distributed to the 8 categories of recipients named in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, verse 60): the poor, the needy, those who collect zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, the freeing of captives, the indebted, the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller.

Who must pay zakat?

Zakat is due from a Muslim who meets these 4 conditions:

  • Being Muslim
  • Being of sound mind and legally responsible
  • Holding net wealth at or above the nisab
  • Keeping that wealth for a full lunar year (hawl, about 354 days)

How is the nisab worked out in 2026?

The nisab is the minimum level of wealth below which no zakat is due. There are two possible nisabs:

Gold nisab
87.48 g
≈ €8,048 in 2026
20 authenticated gold dinars
Silver nisabRecommended
612.36 g
≈ €674 in 2026
200 silver dirhams — lower, and more favourable to the poor
What the scholars recommend

Most contemporary scholars — the European Council for Fatwa and Research among them — recommend taking the silver nisab as the reference threshold. It has historically been the lower of the two, so more people become liable and more of the poor benefit. It is the value BasiraLife uses by default.
