Welcome to Islam

New to Islam — the complete guide

A clear, step-by-step path for your first months as a Muslim. The Shahada, prayer, family, gradual learning. No pressure, no jargon, faithful to the tradition.

“Islam erases what came before it.”

— Sahih Muslim 121

Your conversion erases your whole past. You begin again with a pure heart.

1. The Shahada — your first step

To become a Muslim there is one condition: to say the Shahada (the testimony of faith) sincerely:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah.

“I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”

That is all. No obligatory ceremony, no intermediary, no fee. You are a Muslim from the moment you say these words with faith.

Optional but recommended:

  • • Saying it before two Muslim witnesses in a mosque
  • • Getting a certificate of conversion (useful for Hajj and later administrative steps)
  • • Performing a symbolic ghusl (full ablution) of purification

2. Your first thirty days

Days 1-3
Settling into the new identity
  • • Say the Shahada several times a day
  • • Learn three formulas of dhikr: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar
  • • Start saying “Bismillah” before every meal
Days 4-10
Learning the prayer
  • • Learn the movements of the prayer from a video
  • • Memorise Al-Fatiha (the opening surah)
  • • Start with Fajr (2 rakats) — the simplest
  • • Practise with a guided app (BasiraLife includes a tutorial)
Days 11-20
Taking on all five prayers
  • • Work up to the five daily salats
  • • Install a geolocated prayer-times app
  • • Memorise Al-Ikhlas (surah 112)
  • • Visit a local mosque at least once
Days 21-30
Building a routine
  • • Regular prayer, even imperfect
  • • One verse of the Qur'an a day (the short surahs)
  • • Learn two morning and two evening invocations
  • • Get closer to welcoming Muslims (the local community)

3. The five pillars of Islam

Your frame of reference for life:

  1. 1
Shahada — the testimony of faith (done).
  2. 2
Salat — the five daily prayers.
  3. 3
Zakat — the obligatory alms (2.5% of wealth above the Nisab, once a lunar year).
  4. 4
Sawm — the fast of Ramadan (from dawn to sunset, thirty days).
  5. 5
Hajj — the pilgrimage to Mecca, once in a lifetime if you have the means.

4. Handling family and friends

Announcing your conversion is often a hard moment. Here are the principles:

  • Respect your parents even if they are not Muslim. Allah says: “Accompany them in this world with appropriate kindness.” (Qur'an 31:15)
  • Do not rush the announcement. Take three to six months to settle your practice before speaking about it. Many converts regret announcing too early.
  • Choose the right moment: calm, one to one, not during a non-Muslim holiday.
  • Explain your journey, not the doctrines. Share what moved you.
  • Be ready for varied reactions: denial (“you'll change”), anger, fear, sometimes acceptance.
  • Your best da'wa is your example. Be a better son or daughter than before your conversion. Your conduct will speak louder than your words.

5. Pitfalls to avoid in your first months

  • ✗
Trying to learn everything in a month. Islam is lived over a lifetime. Go at your own pace.
  • ✗
Falling into extremes. Avoid sectarian or rigid currents that would isolate you. Follow the moderate scholars of Ahl As-Sunna.
  • ✗
Cutting off all your old relationships. Islam does not ask that. Keep your friends; be a better friend as a Muslim.
  • ✗
Imposing your faith on those close to you. Guidance is in Allah's hand (Qur'an 28:56). Let your example speak.
  • ✗
Being discouraged by your own imperfection. No one is born a perfect Muslim. Even the companions stumbled. Allah judges the effort.
