Fiqh of menstruation

A complete and modest guide to menstruation (hayd), post-natal bleeding (nifas) and abnormal bleeding (istihada) in Islam. What is permitted, what is suspended, how long it lasts, the closing ghusl — sourced from the four madhhabs.

“This [menstruation] is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam.”

— Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ to Aisha during the Farewell Hajj (Bukhari 305, Muslim 1211)

Menstruation is a natural and entirely NORMAL phenomenon in Islam — never regarded as impure, never diminishing the woman. Allah simply provided ritual adjustments for that period, out of mercy.

The three kinds of bleeding in Islam

الحيض
Hayd
Natural menstruation

The monthly cyclical bleeding of a woman past puberty. Usually 3-7 days (up to 15 according to the majority).

النفاس
Nifas
Post-natal bleeding

Bleeding after childbirth. Up to 40 days (Hanafi/Shafi'i/Hanbali) or 60 (Maliki).

الاستحاضة
Istihada
Pathological bleeding

Abnormal bleeding (outside the cycle or prolonged). It does not cancel the prayers — the woman prays after performing wudu.

Hayd — what is suspended and what remains permitted

Suspended during menstruation

  • • The prayer (salat) — not made up
  • • Fasting (sawm) — MADE UP later
  • • Tawaf around the Kaaba (the other rites of Hajj remain valid)
  • • Vaginal intercourse — Qur'an 2:222
  • • Physically touching the Qur'an (scholarly difference: some allow it when study requires it)
  • • Staying inside the mosque (scholarly difference between madhhabs)
  • • Divorce pronounced during menstruation (blameworthy, though valid according to some)
  • • Reciting the Qur'an aloud (scholarly difference — forbidden per Hanbali/Shafi'i, permitted per Maliki)

Still permitted

  • • Dhikr and supplication (SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and so on)
  • • Reciting the Qur'an from memory (not from the physical mushaf, according to the majority)
  • • Reading tafsir and translations (not the pure Arabic text)
  • • Listening to the Qur'an being recited
  • • Giving sadaqah (charity)
  • • Attending religious classes
  • • Keeping a beautiful appearance (perfume, clothing — Aisha used to wear perfume)
  • • Affection and kisses with the husband (everything short of vaginal intercourse, Muslim 302)
  • • Cooking, sharing meals, sleeping in the same bed
  • • Menstruating women ARE NOT impure — the Prophet ﷺ shared the same food with Aisha while she was menstruating (Muslim 300)

Practical questions

How long does menstruation last?

Minimum duration: 1 day + 1 night (Hanafi) or no minimum at all (majority).

Usual duration: 3 to 7 days.

Maximum duration: 10 days (Hanafi) or 15 days (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali).

Beyond that = istihada (pathological bleeding): the woman resumes her prayers normally, performing wudu.

How do you know menstruation has ended?

Two signs recognised by the scholars:

  • 1. The appearance of the white discharge (al-qassa al-bayda)
  • 2. A complete stop of the bleeding with clear discharge or none at all

Practical test: insert a piece of white cotton in the morning. If it comes out clean you are pure — perform the ghusl and resume the prayers.

Missed prayers: made up or not?

Prayers (salat): NOT made up — consensus of the four madhhabs. Aisha (r.a.): “We were ordered to make up the fast but not the prayer” (Muslim 335).

The fast (sawm) of Ramadan: YES, made up after Ramadan (qada'), before the next Ramadan.

Dhikr and du'a: nothing to make up, since they were never suspended.

And during Hajj or Umra?

If menstruation begins during Hajj:

  • • Carry on with every rite except the tawaf (Bukhari 305, Muslim 1211)
  • • Stay in ihram until menstruation ends, then perform the ghusl and the tawaf
  • • Aisha wept out of sorrow, and the Prophet ﷺ told her: “This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam”
  • • Do not cancel the Hajj — only the tawaf is postponed

May I use hormonal contraception to delay menstruation (Ramadan, Hajj)?

Yes, contemporary scholars (Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Ibn ʿUthaymeen) permit it, provided that:

  • • There are no harmful side effects
  • • The husband agrees (for married women)
  • • It is done on medical advice

Some scholars nonetheless prefer submitting to the fitra (nature) Allah decreed. It is a personal matter to discuss with a doctor and an imam.

The ghusl (full ablution) after menstruation

As soon as menstruation ends, the woman MUST perform the ghusl to resume prayer and fasting. Procedure (Aisha — Muslim 330):

  1. 1Intention (niyya) to purify oneself from menstruation
  2. 2Bismillah
  3. 3Wash the hands three times
  4. 4Wash the private parts with the left hand
  5. 5Perform a complete wudu (as for prayer)
  6. 6Pour water over the head three times, working it through the hair (braids may stay)
  7. 7Wash the right side of the body
  8. 8Wash the left side of the body
  9. 9Make sure the water reaches EVERY fold (armpits, navel, between the toes)

Istihada (abnormal bleeding) — a special case

Istihada (استحاضة) is bleeding that is NOT menstruation: it may occur outside the cycle, exceed the maximum duration, or result from a medical condition (fibroid, IUD, and so on).

“That is only a vein, not menstruation. When menstruation comes, leave the prayer. When it passes, wash yourself and pray.”

— Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ to Fatima bint Abi Hubaysh (Bukhari 228, Muslim 333)

What to do during istihada:

  • 1. Identify your USUAL days of hayd (according to your normal cycle)
  • 2. During those days: treat it as hayd (no prayer, no fasting)
  • 3. On the other bleeding days: treat it as istihada
  • 4. Perform a GHUSL once the usual days are over
  • 5. Then perform a WUDU BEFORE EACH PRAYER (not a ghusl every time)
  • 6. Use sanitary protection (cotton, tampon) to contain the flow
  • 7. Pray normally, fast, have intercourse — everything is permitted

If you are unsure about your cycle, consult an imam or an experienced Muslim sister to determine the nature of the bleeding.
