The fifth pillar of Islam

Hajj & Umra guide 2026

The pilgrimage to Mecca — the steps day by day, the essential rites, the types of Hajj, and both the spiritual and practical preparation. A path grounded in the Qur'an, the Sunnah and the four madhhabs.

Hajj 2026
26 to 31 May 2026 (8-13 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH)

1. Hajj vs Umra: the differences

Hajj (الحجّ)
  • • Obligatory once in a lifetime (the fifth pillar)
  • • Fixed dates: 8-13 Dhu al-Hijjah
  • • Duration: five to six days at least
  • • Includes Arafat, Muzdalifah, Mina and the stoning
  • • A sacrifice (hadi) is required for Tamattu and Qiran
Umra (العمرة)
  • • Voluntary (recommended)
  • • All year round (not while in ihram for Hajj)
  • • Duration: four to five hours
  • • Ihram + Tawaf + Sa'i + Taqsir
  • • Umra in Ramadan equals a Hajj (Bukhari 1863)

2. The three types of Hajj

Hajj Tamattuʿ (التمتع) — the most common

An Umra on arrival, leaving ihram, then entering ihram again for Hajj on 8 Dhu al-Hijjah. A sacrifice is obligatory. Recommended for those who do not live in Mecca.

Hajj Qiran (القران)

Umra and Hajj in one continuous ihram. A sacrifice is obligatory. This is the type the Prophet ﷺ performed on his Farewell Hajj.

Hajj Ifrad (الإفراد)

Hajj alone, without Umra. No sacrifice is obligatory. Recommended for those living nearby (with no miqat to cross).

3. The conditions that make Hajj obligatory

Allah says: “Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by those who can afford the journey.” (Qur'an 3:97). The five conditions, according to the majority of scholars:

  • Being Muslim
  • Being of sound mind (of age, accountable)
  • Having reached puberty
  • Being free (not enslaved — a historical condition)
  • Having the means (istita'a): sufficient physical health, financial resources beyond the family's essential needs, safety of travel, and for women the company of a mahram according to the majority of the madhhabs

4. The steps of Hajj, day by day

8 Dhu al-Hijjah
Yawm al-Tarwiyah
  • • Enter ihram at the miqat (saying the talbiyah: “Labbayka Allahumma labbayk…”)
  • • Set out for Mina
  • • Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and the Fajr of the 9th at Mina, shortened (qasr) but not combined
  • • Spend the night at Mina
9 Dhu al-Hijjah
Yawm al-'Arafah — the central day of Hajj
Major rite
  • • After Fajr, set out for Arafat
  • • Wuquf (standing) at Arafat from the zenith until sunset — the heart of Hajj
  • • Pray Dhuhr and Asr combined and shortened (jam' taqdim) at the time of Dhuhr
  • • Intense du'a and dhikr (the Prophet ﷺ said: “The best supplication is that of the day of Arafat”)
  • • At sunset, set out for Muzdalifah
  • • At Muzdalifah: pray Maghrib and Isha combined and shortened (jam' ta'khir), spend the night, and gather about seventy small pebbles
10 Dhu al-Hijjah
Yawm al-Nahr — the day of Eid al-Adha
  • • Pray Fajr at Muzdalifah, then leave for Mina after sunrise
  • • 1) Stone the great jamrah (Jamrat al-Aqabah) — seven pebbles, saying “Allahu Akbar” with each throw
  • • 2) The sacrifice (hadi) — one animal for Tamattu or Qiran
  • • 3) Halq (shaving the head, preferably for men) or Taqsir (trimming, for women)
  • • 4) Tawaf al-Ifadah around the Kaaba (seven circuits)
  • • 5) Sa'i between Safa and Marwa (seven passages)
11-12-13 Dhu al-Hijjah
Ayyam al-Tashriq
  • • Stay at Mina
  • • Each day after Dhuhr: stone the three jamarat (small → middle → great) with seven pebbles each
  • • Leaving Mina after 12 Dhu al-Hijjah at sunset = Nafar Awwal
  • • Or staying until 13 Dhu al-Hijjah = Nafar Thani (better)
  • • Before leaving Mecca: Tawaf al-Wadaʿ (farewell), obligatory for non-residents (except menstruating women)

5. Umra step by step

  1. 1
Ihram at the miqat: a shower, the ihram garments for men (two white unsewn cloths), the intention for Umra, and beginning the talbiyah.
  2. 2
Tawaf: seven circuits around the Kaaba anticlockwise, starting at the Black Stone.
  3. 3
Two rakats behind Maqam Ibrahim, or elsewhere in the mosque.
  4. 4
Drink Zamzam water and make du'a.
  5. 5
Sa'i: seven passages between the hills of Safa and Marwa, starting at Safa.
  6. 6
Halq (shaving) or Taqsir (trimming): leaving ihram.

6. Practical preparation (before departure)

Spiritual
  • • Sincere repentance (tawbah)
  • • Settling your debts before leaving
  • • Asking forgiveness of those close to you
  • • Learning the rites (talbiyah, du'a)
  • • A pure intention (niyyah): for Allah alone
Practical
  • • Ihram garments (two for men, loose clothing for women)
  • • Passport and Hajj visa (obligatory)
  • • Recommended vaccinations (meningitis)
  • • A small medical kit (plasters, paracetamol)
  • • An agency licensed by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj

7. The six common mistakes

  • 1
Crossing the miqat without ihram — you must go back or compensate with a sacrifice.
  • 2
Trying to touch the Kaaba at any cost — it is NOT obligatory; only the Black Stone is recommended if possible, and crushes should be avoided.
  • 3
Missing the standing at Arafat — the Prophet ﷺ said: “Hajj is Arafat” (Tirmidhi 889). Without wuquf there is no Hajj.
  • 4
Stoning on the wrong day — keep the order (on the 10th, the great jamrah only; on the 11th, 12th and 13th, all three in order).
  • 5
Neglecting the tawaf al-Wadaʿ — obligatory for non-residents.
  • 6
Quarrelling or losing your temper — the Qur'an says: “There is no obscenity, no wickedness and no quarrelling during Hajj” (2:197).
