Verse by verse — translation and tafsir

1Verse 1 / 7

Bismillahi ar-Rahmani ar-Rahim

“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful”

Tafsir (commentary)

The opening verse (basmalah) that begins 113 of the 114 surahs of the Qur'an (only At-Tawbah lacks it). It calls upon Allah by two of His most beloved attributes of mercy: Ar-Rahman (the universal mercy that reaches every creature) and Ar-Rahim (the mercy reserved for the believers). It is the formula that consecrates every lawful act in Islam.

2Verse 2 / 7

Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbi al-ʿalamin

“All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds”

Tafsir (commentary)

A declaration that all praise belongs to Allah alone. The word “al-hamd” carries recognition, gratitude and praise together. “Rabb” means Creator, Master and Nurturer at once. “Al-ʿalamin” (the worlds) covers every creature: humans, jinn, angels, animals, plants and the rest. This verse establishes tawhid al-rububiyyah (the oneness of lordship).

3Verse 3 / 7

Ar-Rahmani ar-Rahim

“The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful”

Tafsir (commentary)

A repetition of Allah's two great attributes. Ibn Kathir explains: “Allah mentions them twice so that we know His mercy is the foundation upon which He created and governs the universe.” The repetition reassures the believer: however almighty the Lord may be, He is above all Merciful.

4Verse 4 / 7

Maliki yawmi ad-din

“Master of the Day of Judgement”

Tafsir (commentary)

“Yawm ad-din” is the Day of Judgement, when everyone will be repaid according to their deeds. This verse establishes belief in accountability and in ultimate justice. It balances the preceding verses: Allah is merciful BUT He is also the equitable Judge. Both readings, “Malik” (Master) and “Mālik” (King), from the seven recitations (qiraat) are authentic.

5Verse 5 / 7

Iyyaka naʿbudu wa iyyaka nastaʿin

“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help”

Tafsir (commentary)

The central verse of the surah — its pivot. It establishes the two foundations of the religion: 1) worship of Allah alone (ʿibadah), rejecting any partner (shirk), 2) asking help from Allah alone. The shift to “we” after “You alone” shows that worship is both individual and communal. Ibn Taymiyya wrote: “Surah Al-Fatiha holds the essence of the Qur'an, and this verse holds the essence of Al-Fatiha.”

6Verse 6 / 7

Ihdina as-sirata al-mustaqim

“Guide us along the straight path”

Tafsir (commentary)

The believer's first request: guidance (hidayah). “As-sirat al-mustaqim” (the straight path) is Islam, the way of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, the path of the prophets. There are two levels of guidance: 1) hidayat al-irshad (general guidance, available to all through revelation and reason), 2) hidayat at-tawfiq (success in putting it into practice, which belongs to Allah alone). This verse is recited at least 17 times a day in the prayers.

7Verse 7 / 7

Sirata alladhina anʿamta ʿalayhim, ghayri al-maghdubi ʿalayhim wa la ad-dallin

“The path of those You have blessed, not of those who incurred Your wrath, nor of those who went astray”

Tafsir (commentary)

The verse spells out what the “straight path” is. “Those You have blessed” are the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous (Qur'an 4:69). “Those who incurred Your wrath” are those who knew the truth and rejected it out of pride (the corrupt scholars). “Those who went astray” are those who sought good without following the right method (the ignorant devout). This is why Islam is the middle way: neither rigid extremism, nor devotion without grounded knowledge.
